Can you tell us about your job experience, have you always been in the Fire Safety and Building Regulation service, if not how did you get into it?

I originally entered the construction industry as a Carpenter Joiner some 35yrs ago. I enjoyed studying for my trade certification so much, I continued to study and gained an honours degree. After a few years of site management I changed tack and moved over to Building control in 2002. Since then I have been involved with a broad cross section of commercial schemes and specialised in Fire safety compliance.

What is your main area of strength?

Having a Fire engineering qualification meant that during my time in Building Control, I always specialised in Part B and associated British standards . It was a natural progression to move on to specialize in fire consultancy with Qualitas Compliance, where my clients can benefit from over 20 years of real life experience and knowledge.

What is your favourite project that you’ve worked on?

I’ve been lucky enough to work on some great projects and with some great people. Those projects have been across many sectors and ranged from simple extensions to schemes valued at over a billion pounds.  Every project brings its own rewards, so it’s impossible to pick any one. If forced to, I’d have to say my next project.

What do you think sets Qualitas Compliance apart from other companies in the industry?

Qualitas Compliance keep the clients firmly at the fore front with a collaborative approach . Qualitas Compliance is a young dynamic company, but is built around the vast experience of the Qualitas team. This experience and knowledge of the legislation and guidance documents provides expert advice to deliver a pragmatic approach to compliance.

What do you find most rewarding about working in the fire safety and building regulation field?

Being part of the process to find solutions to problems and challenging situations. Working with designers and principal designers you feel part of the team, and its great to think you have helped to deliver a safe compliant solution that is hopefully as close to the clients brief as possible.

How do you stay updated on the latest developments and changes in fire safety and building regulations?

Qualitas Compliance has a great collaborative spirit and identifies/ addresses training needs very well. To supplement this, I count myself lucky that over the years I’ve gained a network of former colleagues/ clients that I regularly engage with. My private time social media activity, is very often focused on shared articles, new legislation and analysis with a variety of stakeholders. Attending in person external seminars is always enjoyable too.

Can you describe a typical day in your role at Qualitas Compliance?

Very few days are the same as the last. We have a very varied  and growing client base. That means I could be working on a block of flats one day and a school the next.

What do you do to relax outside of work? (hobbies, interests, holidays, events)

I’m an active member of a Surf Lifesaving Club. I compete in Masters events and get involved with coaching. I have a very large extended family and a few pets which keeps me very busy. Cooking Christmas dinner for 23 is not so relaxing but enjoyable none the less.
